CAD/CAM Flashcards
What is CAD and what does it stand for?
CAD stands for Computer-aided design.
CAD is the use of computers to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer and improve the quality of design.
What is an example of CAD?
Blender — an open-source CAD, animation, and image processing application with an active community of users.
What are advantages of CAD?
Improves Accuracy
Decreases Errors
Better Quality
Saves time
What are disadvantages of CAD?
Work can be lost because of the sudden breakdown ofcomputers.
Work is prone to viruses.
Work could be easily “hacked”
Time taking process to know how to operate or run the software.
High production or purchasing cost for new systems.
Time and cost of training the staff which will work on it.
What is CAM and what does it stand for?
CAM stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing.
CAM software converts computer-aided design (CAD) models into information that can be used by machines on the shop floor. This type of software helps manufacturing companies optimize the process of transforming raw materials and components into finished products.
What is an example of CAM?
Lazer cutting
What are advantages of CAM?
Greater speed in producing components.
Greater accuracy and consistency, with each component or finished product exactly the same.
Greater efficiency as computer controlled machines do not need to take breaks.
What are disadvantages of CAM?
Computor errors are possible
Training workers is expensive
Computers and controllers to run the software and CNC (control numerical control) machinery for manufacturing is expensive.
