Cabling/Connectivity Flashcards
Cable Types
List the copper cable standards.
10base-T
10base-2
10base-5
Cable Types
What does 10base-T feature?
Twisted pair cable.
Maximum length of 100m.
RJ-45 Connectors.
Operates at 10 Mb/s.
Uses Baseband transmission.
Cable Types
The two types of Fibre Optics are?
Singlemode and Multimode.
Cable Types
What is Singlemode Fiber Optics used for?
Long distance transmissions.
Singlemode utilises one fibre strand for one ray of light to transfer data.
Cable Types
What is Multimode transmission used for?
Short distance transmissions.
In multimode light rays tracel across multiple glass fibre strands.
Connectors
What are rhe differences between RJ-45 and RJ-11?
RJ-45 is an 8 pin connector used for ethernet cables while RJ-11is a 6 pin connector used in telephone lines.
Legacy Connectors
What was a Serial cable used for?
Connecting modems, terminals and various peripherals.
It, as you might have guessed, primarily handled data transfer
Legacy Connectors
What were Parrallel ports used for?
Used for various peripherals to connect to a PC.
Fibre Connectors
ST Connector (auto turn over)
Used a half-twist bayonet tupe connector
Fibre Connectors
SC type connector (auto turn over)
A push/pull connector. Similar to Digital Audio cables.
Fibre Connectors
LC Connector (auto turn over)
Uses a flange on top, similar to an RJ-45 Ethernet (CAT 6).
Fibre Connectors
MT-RJ type connector (auto turn over)
A small unusually two pronged connector. Due to it’s size it is commonly found in small form factor devices.
Ethernet Catagories
Name the Catagories for ethernet cabling.
CAT1 CAT2 CAT3 CAT4 CAT5 CAT5e CAT6 CAT6a CAT7
Ethernet Catagories
CAT1 cables are generally used for which purpose?
Telephonw wire
Ethernet Catagories
What CATagory is the most common today?
Why?
CAT5e
It is cheap, readily available and handles 1Gb transfer speeds/data rate. Most moderm devices come with 1Gb NICs as standard.
Ethernet Catagories
List the details of CAT6 and CAT6a
CAT6:
10Gb/s over 55m
CAT6a:
Has better immunisation and crosstalk prevention than base 6
Both:
Requires all equiptment down the line to be CAT6 certified.
Weariness that cables are properly terminated.
Testing can be arranged to ensure installs are done as per the CAT6 guidelines.
Antennas
Explain Omni vs Directional antennas.
Omni antennas send data over a shorter distances but in every direction. They tend to look like a ‘stick’
Directional antennas tend to have a ‘shield’ behind them that help focus incoming and outgoing transmissions, resulting in further but directed transmissions.
Antennas
Explain Point to Point communication
This is where there is only two devices sending/receiving to each other.
Antennas
Explain Multipoint Communication.
This is where the communcation link is between multiple senders and receivers.
Wireless Types:
What is Bluetooth? Explain.
A short range radio wireless technology. This is low power and connects devices, generally for data transfer. Great for low battery devices.
It has a range of <100m.
Class one <100m
Class two <10m (Most Common Class)
Class three <1m
Crosstalk
Alien Cross Talk vs Crosstalk
ATX is when one cable interferes with another seperate cable
Crosstalk is when one circuit interferes with another circuit in the same system
Crosstalk
Near End Cross Talk is?
The crosstalk occuring nearest to the transmitter.
NEXT
Crosstalk
Far End Cross Talk is?
When cross talk occurs near to the reciever.
