C9 - Electrical Current Flashcards
what direction is conventional current
from positive to negative
what are conduction/free electrons
these are negatively charged electrons that are free to move about, they allow the metal to conduct an electrical current
how do conduction electrons form
usually one electron from each atom breaks away and this then becomes a conduction electron
in what direction do conduction electrons travel when an electrical force is applied to it
because they are negative they go away from negative terminal of cell and towards the positive terminal. the opposite of current
what makes there be a current in a circuit
when charged particles flow past a point we say that there is a current
what is current measured in
amperes
what is charge measured in
couloumbs C
what is equation for charge
charge = current x time
what is the elementary e charge of each electron
1.6 x 10-19
what is kirchoffs first law
the sum of current entering a point in a circuit is the same as that leaving the point
what is NAVE
n = number density a = cross sectional area v = mean drift velocity e = elementry charge I = nAve
