C9: Crude oil And Fuels Flashcards
What is Crude Oil?
A mixture of Hydrocarbons (molecules made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms)
What are alkanes?
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons, this means their carbon atoms are joined to eachother by single bonds
How do you seperate crude oil into fractions?
Using fractional distillation
What is the difference between an alkane and an alkene?
Alkanes have single carbon bonds but alkenes can have double carbon bonds
What are the different fractions from crude oil?
Fuel oil, diesel, kerosene, petrol, Butane
What happens to viscocity as the hydrocarbon length increases?
As they hydrocarbon length increases, viscocity increases
What happens to flammability as the hydrocarbon chain length increases?
As the hydrocarbon chain length increases, flammability decreases.
What happens to the boiling point as the hydrocarbon chain length increases?
As the hydrocarbon chain length increases, the boiling point increases
If a hydrocarbon chain is very long, will it have high or low: Flammability, viscocity and boiling point?
It will have:
- High viscocity
- Low flammability
- A high boiling point
If a hydrocarbon chain is very short, will it have high or low: Flammability, viscocity and boiling point?
It will have:
- Low viscocity
- High flammability
- A low boiling point
What is complete combustion?
Combustion with a plentifull supply of oxygen
What is in-complete combustion?
Combustion with a lack of oxygen supply
What is cracking?
The procces of breaking long chain hydrocarbons into smaller chain hydrocarbons
What is viscosity?
Viscosity is a measure of a fluids resistance to flow
