C8 Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What does it mean if a substance is pure
Only contains one compound or element .Not mixed with anything else
A chemixally pure substance will melt or boil at
Speicific temperatures
What are formulations ?
Formulations are useful mixtures that have been designed for a particular use
How can you test for chlorine
Chlorine bleaches a damp litmus paper , turning it white
How do you test for oxygen
If you put a glowing splint inside a test tube containing oxygen , the oxygen will relight the glowing splint
How so yountest for carbon dioxide
You can test for carbon dioxide by bubbling it through a solution of sodium hydroxide. If the gas is carbon dioxide, the solution will turn cloudy
What is the test for hydrogen
If you hold a lit splint at the open end of a test tube containing hydrogen, you’ll get a squeky pop
Practical of chromotography
Step 1 - Cut out a rectangular piece of filter paper a little bit longer than the height of a beaker.Make sure your paper is narrower than the beaker
Step 2 - Draw a line in pencil , 1 cm from the bottom of the paper
Step 3 - Put a dot of the solution that you want to separate onto the pencil line .Wrap the top of the paper around the splint
Step 4 -Put a small amount of water in the beaker.
Step 5 -Balance the splint on the rim of the beaker. The bottom of the paper should just dip into the water. The pencil line and the sample solution must stay above the water
Step 6 - Leave until the water has soaked up to near the top of the paper
