C6 - Rate And Extent Of Chemical Changes Flashcards
Rate of reaction depends on 4 things
Temperature
Surface area of a solid
Concentration of a solution
Whether a catalyst is used
How does increasing the temperature increase the rate of reaction ?
When temperature increases the particles move faster
If they move faster, collide more frequently
How does increasing the concentration or pressure increase the rate of reaction
If a solution is more concentrated, more particles are in the same volume. When the pressure of a gas is increased, means the same number of particles are now in a smaller area.So collisions are more frequent
How does increasing the surface area increase the rate of reaction
If one of the reactants is a solid then breaking it into smaller pieces increases the surface area.Means the same amount of solid has a bigger surface area.So more of the solid’s particles are available to other particles of the reactanta.Collisions will be more frequent
