C7 organic chemistry Flashcards
what is an addition reaction
a reaction in which one molecule combines with another to form a larger molecule with no other products.
what is a functional group
part of a molecule that gives it distinct characteristics or reactions
what happens when alcohol reacts with oxygen
-can burn
-can become carboxylic acids/oxidised
what happens when alcohol reacts with sodium
fizzes and produces hydrogen
what happens to alcohol when mixed with water
gives neutral solution
what happens when alcohols mix with carboxylic acids
makes an ester
what is the functional group for carboxylic acids
O
ll
C-O-H
what suffix is used for carboxylic acids
oic
whats the difference in terms of ionising between strong acids and weak acids
strong acids are highly ionising while weak acids are not
what happens when a carbonate and a carboxylic acid react
gentle fizz
what is an ester
an ester is a molecule which contain the functional group ‘-C-O=C-O’ and can be identified by their distinctive fruity smell. They also evaporate easily (we say they are volatile) which makes them a useful group of compounds to use in perfumes and food flavourings.
what type of bonds do polymers have
covalent
what is an addition polymer
a polymer with no other products
what is a condensation polymer
a polymer with some small extra products for example water
what’s an amino acid
a molecule that has both amino and carboxylic functional groups
