C7: ALCOHOLS AND CARBOXYLIC ACIDS Flashcards
How are alcohols made?
when an alkene reacts with H2O
What are the 2 ways in which ethanol can be made?
-fermentation of yeast: glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide (requires anaerobic conditions)
-steam (H2O): ethene + H2O –> ethanol (requires high temp and phosphoric catalyst)
What are the uses of alcohols?
-alcoholic drinks
-solvent
-fuel
What is formed when alcohols bond with oxygen?
a carboxylic acid
(eg: ethanol + oxygen —> ethanoic acid)
Are carboxylic acids weak or strong acids?
weak acids
Alcohol + carboxylic acid —> _____ + ____
alcohol + carboxylic acid —> ester + water
What does making an ester require?
a sulfuric acid catalyst
What are properties of esters?
-volatile (evaporate easily)
-sweet scent
