C1: GROUP 7 Flashcards
Proprties of group 7 elements
-non-metals with coloured vapours
-as you go down the group the elements become less reactive
-as you go down the group boiling and melting point increases
How do halogens react with other non metals and how do they react with metals?
-non-metals: form molecular compounds
-metals: form ionic bonds
Displacement reactions with halogens
a more reactive halogen can displace a less reactive halogen
(eg: chlorine + potassium iodide → potassium choride + iodine)
Describe the trend in reactivity in group 7 elements
-as you go down the group the atoms get larger
-this means that the outermost electron is further away from the nucleus
-therefore the forces of attraction between the nucleus and the outermost electron are weaker
-therefore it is difficult to gain an electron which makes the element less reactive
