C7 Flashcards
What is crude oil ?
A mixture of molecules called hydrocarbons
There are different types of hydrocarbons
What are alkanes?
A family of hydrocarbon compounds
What is the homologous series?
A family of molecules which only differ by the chain length.
.what is the abbreviation for the first 4 alkanes
Monkeys - methane
Eat - ethane
Peanut - propane
butter - butane
What type of bonding occurs in alkanes?
Covalent bonding
, Why is methane a gas at room temperature?
Has weak intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules which requires little energy to overcome
What happens to the boiling point when alkanes get bigger? Why ?
There are more electrons therefore more intermolecular forces of attraction which needs more energy to overcome
What happens to the viscosity of the chains as they get longer?
More viscous (less runny) because they are more likely to get tangled so flow less easily
How was crude oil made?
Plankton and other living things buried in mud and rotting over millions of years
What is a fraction?
Mixture of alkanes with similar boiling points
What is cracking?
Breaking down long chain hydrocarbons into shorter chain hydrocarbons that are useful
What are the 2 products formed during cracking?
Shorter alkane and an alkene
What ave 2 methods of cracking?
- Catalytic cracking
- Steam cracking
What are 2 conditions for catalytic cracking?
High temperatures and a catalyst
What are 2 conditions of steam cracking?
High temperatures and steam
