C10 Flashcards
phytomining
involves plants to extract copper.
The plants are deliberately planted on low grade ore sites
- the plants take up copper compounds in the roots
- when the plants are grown they are burned. The ash can the be dissolved in water which will the contain the copper compounds.
Extraction of the copper from the solution can be done by displacement, using scrap ion
- This method can also be used to remove other metal ions that are contaminating land. It can be slow as the plants take time to grow
Bioleaching.
Not done.
Bioleaching is the extraction of specific metals from their ores using bacteria.
- Bacteria will absorb copper from their surroundings.
- A leachate solution can be obtained by passing a liquid through a large colony of the bacteria
