C5e- Gas volume Flashcards
What methods can you use to collect a Gas?
gas syringe
upturned measuring cylinder
upturned burette
What are the advantages of using a gas syringe?
can be used for any gas
allows an accurate measurement of the volume of gas produced
Describe the upturned cylinder or burette method
a delivery tube is used to bubble gas into an upside down measuring cylinder
What are the disadvantages of using the upturned cylinder or burette method?
the method cant be used for gases that dissolve in water
How can you measure the mass of gas that a reaction produces?
by carrying out an experiment on a mass balance. as the gas is released the mass disappearing is measured on the balance
What are the disadvantages of measuring the mass of a gas?
it releases gas into the room
What is rtp?
room temperature (25c) and pressure (1 atmosphere)
What is the volume of 1 mole of any gas at rtp?
24dm3
What is the equation to find moles?
Moles = Mass ÷ Mr
What is the equation linking moles, volume and 24dm3?
Moles = Volume ÷ 24
How would you work out the mass of 12dm3 of carbon dioxide (CO2) ?
1) moles = volume ÷ 24
12 ÷ 24 = 0.5
2) moles = mass ÷ mr
0.5 x 44 = 22g
