C1h-paints And Pigments Flashcards
What does the solvent do?
Thins the paint and makes it easier to spread
What does binding medium do?
Sticks pigment in paint to surface
What does pigment do?
Substance that gives paint its colour
What do paints contain?
Solvent
Binding medium
Pigment
What is different about pigment and solvent in oil paints?
Pigment dispersed in an oil
Solvent dissolves in oil
Why is paint a colloid?
The particles are mixed and dispersed with particles of a liquid but are not dissolved
Why won’t components of a colloid separate?
Colloids don’t separate out because the particles are so small
They don’t settle out at the bottom
Why are paints used?
To protect surfaces
How do most paints dry?
Paints are applied as a thin layer
Solvent evaporates
How do oil paints dry?
Solvent evaporates
Oil is oxidised by atmospheric oxygen
What are emulsion paints?
Water based paints that dry when the solvent evaporates
What do thermochromic pigments do?
Pigments that change colour when heated or cooled
What are thermochromic paints used for?
Baby products - warns you when somethings too hot
Mood rings - heat sensitive pigments
How can acrylic paints be added to thermochromic paints to make more colour changes?
Thermochromic pigment loses its colour at certain temperatures Eg blue pigment loses colour at 27c Yellow acrylic added = Yellow above 27c Green below 27c
What do phosphorescent pigments do?
Glow in the dark
