C5. Electricity & Chemistry Flashcards
Refining of metal
Anode: impure metal
Cathode: pure metal
Electrolyte: solution of the pure metal
Electroplating of metal
Anode: plating metal
Cathode: object
Electrolyte: solution of the plating metal
How do you achieve an even and thin layer of coating (electroplating)?
- Use a small current, by using a resistor
- Rotate the object you are electroplating slowly
- Immerse the object completely in the electrolyte
Uses of aluminium (extraction of Al)
- Packaging - drinks cans, foil wrapping, foil containers
- Transport - aeroplanes
- Overhead electrical cables
- As a building material
- For kitchen utensils
Uses of chlorine (extraction of Cl from brine)
- For making bleach
- Producing hydrochloric acid
- Sterilising drinking water & swimming pools
- Making pesticides
- Making medical drugs
- Making the plastic PVC
Uses of sodium hydroxide (extraction of NaOH from brine)
- Making detergents, washing powder & soaps
- Making textile dyes
- In the extraction of aluminium
- Making paper
- Making ceramics (eg. tiles, furnace bricks)
Uses of hydrogen (extraction of H2 from brine)
- Making nylon
- Making hydrogen peroxide
- To ‘harden’ vegetable oils to make margarine
- As a fuel in hydrogen fuel cells
How do you strengthen aluminium for use in overhead power lines and electrical cables?
Wrap aluminium around a central core of steel
What are ceramic discs used for?
Ceramic discs are used to prevent the electric current passing from cables to pylons
3 reasons why molten cryolite is used during extraction of aluminium from bauxite by electrolysis
- to reduce cost
- to lower the operating temperature
- to increase the conductivity
