C3. Atoms, Elements & Compounds Flashcards
Proton number (atomic number)
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Nucleon number (mass number)
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element which have the same proton number but a different nucleon number
Uses of radioactive isotopes
- To check for oil/gas leaks (sodium-24)
- To treat cancer patients (cobalt-60)
- To kill bacteria (cobalt-60/caesium-137)
Element
A substance made of atoms with the same atomic number
Compound
A substance in which two or more elements are chemically combined
Mixture
A mixture contains two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Alloy
A mixture of metal with other elements
General properties of metals
- Good conductors of electricity and heat
- High MP and BP
- Hard, strong, do not shatter
- Malleable and ductile
- Shiny (when polished)
- Sonorous
- High density
- Form positive ions
- React with oxygen to form oxides that are bases
- 3 are magnetic (iron, nickel, cobalt)
Structure of ionic compounds
A lattice (regular arrangement) of alternating positive and negative ions
Allotropes
Different forms of the same element in the same physical state
Metallic bonding
A lattice of positive (metal) ions in a ‘sea’ of electrons
Molecule
Two or more atoms combined
