C4.2 Flashcards
what is the electron configuration of a basic helium atom
2,8,8,2
relative mass of a proton
1 hydrogen atom
relative mass of electron
Almost 0
Relative mass of neutron
1 hydrogen atom
no of electrons =
no of protons
atoms in the same element have what?
same no of protons
the events in the periodic table are arranged how?
in order of proton number
what is given when light is emitted from particular elements?
gives a characteristic line spectrum
what is spectroscopy used to do?
discover new elements
what did the discovery of some elements depend on
the development of new practical techniques
spectroscopy
Boron has a proton no of 5 and a relative atomic mass of 11. How many 1. protons are there 2. neutrons 3. electrons (so like protons and neutrons is 11)
- 11
- 11-5= 6
- (no of protons same as electrons) = 5
how do you know what group an element is in using electron configuration?
look at how many electrons in outer shell
group 7 elements
want to gain electron
easier higher up table as it’s closer to positive charges
group 1 elements
easier to lose when electron is further away from nucleus as less of a bond
why do group 1 react so violently with 7?
group 1- lose 1 electron
group 7- gain
so both help to gain a full outer shell
