C4.1.4 - The Noble Gases Flashcards
Where are the noble gases found?
Vertical column on the far right of the periodic table
Why are they called the noble gases?
Because they are so unreactive and take part in very few chemical reactions
What state are the noble gases at room temperature?
Gas state
Describe the electrons in a noble gas
They have a complete outer shell of electrons so the have no tendency to lose or gain electrons to form ions
Describe the structure of a noble gas
Monatomic - Single atoms with very weak forces of attraction between them
These forces are easily overcome by heat giving them very low boiling points
What happens going down group 0
The attractive forces between atom gets stronger
The boiling point increases
Density increases
