Baptism
First sacraments all Christians recieve
Purpose/Importance of Baptism
To recieve eternal life, and frees humans from sin
Origin of Baptism
Started from John the Baptist, immersing the person, purification of ‘sins’ or sign of leaving old sinful life being born again in Christ
Infant Baptism
Infants would get baptised (few weeks later they are born), some churches see this as a important part of Church tradition
Reasons of infant baptism
cleanses original sin, welcomes a child into God’s family, allows to take other sacraments as growing up, some argue that it is biblical
Believers Baptism
Baptism that takes place as a sign that someone has chosen to be a follower of Jesus (usually involves practice of immersion
Rite
Set pattern of words + actions
Vows
Solemn promises made with God and people as witnesses
Importance of marriage as Christians
Couples make vow to each other and also to God, meaning the marriage is permanent, key aspect - accepting children as gift from God
Christian funeral rites
Marks the close of life on earth, serves as reminder of Christian faith and hope of eternal life with God (also an opportunity to thank God for life of loved one that has passed, and what God has done for humans)
Features of funeral services
Bible reading, eulogy, prayer, hymns, burial/cremation, requien mass
First Communion
rite of passage (mainly Anglican, Catholic + Lutheran denominations) where Christian recieves Eucharist/communion for first time
Sacrament
rites of passage that Christians see as visible sign of invisible grace recieved by God during these rites.
Confirmation
Last sacrament of initiation where person confirms vows of baptism and recieves gifts of Holy Spirit
