C4: Chemical calculations Flashcards
What is a mole?
amount of substance
What is Avogadro’s number?
6.02 x 10 to the power of 23
How do you work out the amount of moles?
mass / Mr
What is the units for Moles?
mol
How do you work out the amount amount of atoms or molecules?
mol x avagadro
What is another word for the balancing numbers?
stochiometry
Why might chemical reactions not be completely successful?
because of the equipment.
you could lose products and reactants whilst transferring.
they could lose gases to the atmosphere.
the reaction may not be complete.
What is the limiting reactant?
the reactant that gets used up first.
what is the yield?
the mass of a product
How do you work out the percentage yield?
actual mass of product/ theoretical mass of product x 100
What are the steps to calculating reacting masses?
- Balance the equation.
- Work out the moles of the ‘known’ substance.
- Work out the moles of the unknown substance.
- Answer the question.
What is concentration?
the amount of a substance in a volume.
what is 1dm cubed in cm cubed?
1000 cm cubed
what is the equation for concentration?
c=n/v
What are the units for concentration?
mol/dm cubed
