C3.2 Atoms In Ions Flashcards
Which wubatomic particle is involved in ionic and covalent bonding?
Electron
How does a group 1 metal become a positive ion?
It gives away one of its electrons leaving it with a full outer shell
How does a group 7 non-metal atom become a negative ion?
It gains one electron to give it a full outer shell.
What happens in ionic bonding?
In ionic bonds, the metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation, whereas the nonmetal accepts those electrons to become a negatively charged anion.
How can I know the charge of a monatomic ion based on its position in the periodic table.
If it is a metal (on the left) it will be positive, If it is a non metal(on the right) it will be negative.
