C1.7 Ions,atoms And Isotopes Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ion?
A
An ion is an atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge.
2
Q
What is an istotope?
A
Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number.
3
Q
Why do ions have a charge?
A
It is charged because the number of electrons do not equal the number of protons in the atom or molecule.
4
Q
What are the raltive sizes of an atom and its nucleus?
A
The diameter of a nucleus is about 2 × 10 -15 m and the diameter of an atom is 1 × 10 -10 m
5
Q
What makes an isotope different to an atom?
A
It has a different number of neutrons
6
Q
Why does chlorine not have a whole mass number?
A
This is because chlorine contains two different isotopes, chlorine-35 and chlorine-37.
