C3.1 The Periodic Table Flashcards
What did Bunsen and Kirchoff do and when?
In 1859 they found more elements
What Dobereiner do and when?
In 1829 he put the element in property groups of 3
What did John Newlands do and when?
In 1860 he put the elements in order of increasing mass and groups of 8
What did Mendeleev do?
Put the elements in mass order but left gaps
When were elements put in proton number?
Early 20th century when subatomic particles were found
What is the density of alkali metals?
Low density
What group are alkali metals?
Group 1
What happens when you react an alkali metal with a non metal?
Makes a white solid that dissolves in water
What happens when you react an alkali metal with water?
Hydrogen is made and a hydroxide with dissolves in water to make an alkali solution
Explain the reactivity trend in alkali metals?
Reactivity increases group the group as the want to loose an electron and down the group the atom is larger so it’s further from the nucleus with more shielding so the electron is more easily removed
Explain the boiling point trend in alkali metals?
The further down the group the lower the MP and BP
Name 6 properties of transition metals?
Hard Durable Catalysts Coloured Sonorous Maluble High BP (except Mercury) Good conductor
Name a use for transition metals?
Glazes for the colour
Where are transition metals?
Middle of the periodic table
What group are halogens?
Group 7
