15
Q

How do you make a soluble salt?

A
  1. Acid + insoluble base
  2. Titration (acid + alkali)
16
Q

What is the method for a precipitation reaction?

A
  1. Add a spatula of each soluble salt to a test tube with deionised water
  2. Mix both test tubes together and mix together, creating an insoluble precipitate
  3. Filter the mixture
  4. Rinse the contents with deionised water
  5. Leave to dry in an oven
17
Q

What is the method for an acid + insoluble base?

A
  1. Heat the acid to speed up the reaction
  2. Add the base to the acid until it is in excess
  3. Filter off the mixture, leaving you with the salt and water
  4. Gently heat to evaporate the water
  5. Leave to cool and crystallise
18
Q

What is an electrolyte?

A

A molten or dissolved ionic compound that can conduct electricity

19
Q

What happens during electrolysis?

A
  1. The cations move towards the cathode and become reduced
  2. The anions move towards the anode and become oxidised
20
Q

Why can an ionic compound not conduct electricity?

A

The ions are in fixed positions and cannot move

21
Q

What happens at the cathode in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions?

A

If the metal is more reactive than hydrogen, hydrogen is produced

22
Q

What happens at the anode in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions?

A

If none of the halide ions (chlorine, bromine and iodine) are present, oxygen is formed

23
Q

What is the half equation if oxygen is produced at the anode in electrolysis of an aqueous solution?

A

4OH- —-> O2 + 2H2o + 4e-
