C2H - Why Is Salt So Important Flashcards
How does pumping hot water play a role in the mining of salt ?
You pump hot water underground so therefore the salt dissolves and the salt solution is forced to the surface by the pressure of the water
What is salts chemical name ?
Sodium chloride
What happens if we don’t fill the holes after mining ?
Subsidence. The land would collapse
What is sodium chloride used as ?
Preservative
Flavouring
Used on roads
What are the three useful products of electrolysis ?
Hydrogen gas
Chlorine gas
Sodium hydroxide
Where is hydrogen gas given off ?
At the cathode
Where is chlorine gas given off ?
Anode
How is the sodium hydroxide formed ?
From the ions left in the solution
In terms of ions what happens at the cathode ?
Two hydrogen ions accept on electron each to become one hydrogen molecule
What’s the equation for what happens at the cathode ?
2H+ + 2E- = H2
What happens in terms of ions at the anode ?
Two chloride ions loose an electron each to become one chlorine molecule
What’s the equation for the stuff that happens at the anode ?
2Cl- - 2e- = Cl2
What is hydrogen gas used for ?
To make ammonia and margarine
What is the chlorine used for ?
To disinfect water or to make plastics
What’s the sodium hydroxide used for ?
To make soap
