C1G - Smells Flashcards
Esters are what ?
Smells that are used in perfumes.
Cosmetics can be ?
Synthetic or natural. Depending on their source
Are esters synthetic or natural ?
Can be both
What are the necessary properties of perfume ?
1) evaporates easily
2) non toxic
3) does not react with water
4) does not irritate the skin
5) insoluble in water
Word equation for esterification ?
Acid + Alcohol = Ester + Water
Why do perfumes need to be able to easily evaporate ?
Because if the can’t the perfume particles won’t reach your nose and you won’t be able to smell it
If perfumes reacted with water what would happen ?
It would react with your sweat
In order to evaporate what do particles need ?
Sufficient energy to overcome the attraction to other molecules in the liquid
How come perfume evaporates easily ?
Weak attraction exists between molecules so they are able to overcome the attraction to one another
Lily tries to remove her nail vanish using water. It won’t come off. Why ?
Attraction between water molecules is stronger than attraction between water molecules and nail vanish particles
Water is a solvent and salt is a solute. Explain ?
Water will dissolve salt. Salt will just dissolve.
Salty water. What is it ? Why ?
A solution because it’s a solvent and a solute
Does soluble mean it won’t dissolve ?
No. It means it will
What would we call something that doesn’t dissolve ?
Insoluble
Why do we need to test cosmetics ?
To ensure they do not have an adverse effect on humans
