C2.7 Electro-Chemistry Flashcards
What is meant by electroylsis?
The decomposition of ionic substances into simpler substances when an electric current is passed through them
List the 2 conditions the electrodes must be
Inert
Conductors of electricity
What is an electrolyte?
The liquid or solution that conducts electricity and is decomposed by it
What electrode do cations (Positive) go to?
Cathode (Negative)
What electrode do anions (Negative) go to?
Anode (Positive)
Why must ionic substances be molten or dissolved?
To allow free movement of ions
What is Bauxite extracted from?
Aluminium
What is Bauxite purified into before the aluminium can be extracted?
Alumina (Aluminium Oxide)
Why would an anode need to be replaced regularly during the extraction of aluminium?
Oxygen reacts with the carbon anode which makes CO2 which wears away the anode
In the electrolysis of molten lead bromide, will lead go to the cathode or anode? What will be the observation? (Liquid)
Cathode
Silvery Grey liquid formed
In the electrolysis of molten lead bromide, will bromide go to the cathode or anode? What observation will be made? (Gas)
Anode
Red-Brown Pungent gas
In the electrolysis of molten lithium chloride, will lithium ion go to the cathode or anode? What are the observations? (Liquid)
Cathode
Silvery Grey liquid
In the electrolysis of molten lithium chloride, will chloride ion go to the cathode or anode? What are the observations? (Gas)
Anode
Yellow Green Pungent gas
In the electrolysis of molten sodium iodine, will sodium go to the cathode or anode? What are the observations? (Liquid)
Cathode
Silvery Grey Liquid
In the electrolysis of molten sodium iodine, will iodine go to the cathode or anode? What are the observations? (Gas)
Anode
Purple Pungent Gas
