C2.4 - Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What is the equation for rate of reaction?
amount of reactant /time OR amount of product formed/time
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy particles must have in order for the reaction to occur.
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
It increases the speed of the reacting particles so that they collide more frequently and more energetically. This increases the rate of reaction.
How does the pressure of a gas affect the rate of reaction?
It increases the frequency of collisions and s increases the rate of reaction.
How does an increased concentration of reactants affect the rate of reaction?
It increases the frequency of collisions, because there are more available particles to collide with, so increases the rate of reaction.
How does increasing the surface area oF solid reactants affect the rate of reaction?
There is more total area in which collisions can occur, so more collisions occur, therefore increasing the rate of reaction.
How do catalysts change the rate of chemical reactions?
They speed it up, but are not used up during the reaction.
Why are catalysts used in industry?
To speed up the process and reduce costs.
