C2.1 - Structure and Bonding Flashcards
Compounds are made up of…
Atoms of 2 or more element, chemically bonded together.
What does chemical bonding involve?
Either transferring or sharing electrons in the highest occupied energy levels of atoms, in order to achieve the electronic structure of a noble gas.
What is the name given to an atom which has transferred electrons when forming a chemical bond?
Ion
Atoms which loose electrons become …….. charged ions
Positively
Atoms which gain electrons become …….. charged ions
Negatively
Ions have the same structure as what type of gas?
Noble (in Group 8/0 of the periodic table)
What are the elements in Group 1 called?
The Alkali Metals.
What can the alkali metals react with in order to form ionic compounds?
Non-Metal elements. The metal ion formed has a single positive charge.
What are the elements in Group 7 called?
The Halogens.
What can the halogens react with in order to form ionic compounds?
The alkali metals. The halide ions formed have a single negative charge.
What is an ionic compound?
A giant structure of ions.
What are ionic compounds held together with?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction, between oppositely charged ions.
What is ionic bonding?
When the electrostatic forces in the lattice of an ionic compound act in all directions.
What are the bonds called when atoms share pairs of electrons?
Covalent Bonding.
Are these forces strong or weak?
Strong.
