C2.1 The Cell As An Efficient, Open Systen Flashcards
What life processes do cells carry out?
- intake of nutrients
- movement
- growth
- response to stimuli
- waste removable
- reproduction
What is an open system?
An open system is where both matter and every can be exchanged across the boundary
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are?
The major elements that make up a cell
What is the cell membranes function?
The cell membrane is a protective barrier for the cell; allows the transport of needed materials into the cell and waste materials out: is important for cell interaction and communication, and for recognition of molecules.
What is the nucleus? And what is it’s function?
The nucleus is the organelle that contains DNA, the genetic material of the cell, and directs all cellular activities. The nucleus is surrounded by the nuclear envelope, which has pores to allow transportation of materials.
What is cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance inside the cell membrane: contains the nutrients required by the cells and to carry on the life process
What is the cell wall?
The cell wall is found in plants, bacteria, some protist, and fungi: the cell wall is a rigid frame around the cell.
What is chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are found only in plants and some prosist. They contain chlorophyll that produces the colour green.
What are vacuoles and vesicles?
Vacuoles and vesicles are membrane-bound structures that serve to store nutrients.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
The endoplasmic reticulum is a series of interconnected small tubes that branch from nuclear envelope.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes are non-membrane-bounded particles where protein synthesis occurs.
Lysosomes
Lysosomes are membrane-bound sacs, the cell which digestion goes on.
Golgi apparatus
The Golgi apparatus receives substance from endoplasmic reticulum and packages them for transport out of cell.
Mitochondria
Mitochondria concerts chemical energy in sugar into energy the cell can use
