C1.0-undersanting Cells Flashcards
Who was the first person to view single celled organisms and what kind of microscope was used?
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek
Who is Robert Hooke? And what did he observe?
Robert Hooke in 1665 from England used a three lens system. Hooke observed cork through a microscope and found it was mostly composed of empty chambers.
How many eye piece are used for a compound microscope?
A compound microscope uses two or three lens
- an eye piece
- an objective lens
- field lens
How do you calculate magnification?
Magnification= (objective lens) x (ocular lens)
What is spontaneous generation?
Spontaneous generation is the idea that loving things can come from non-living things
Examples:
-mice can come from grain
- flies an come from rotten meat
Who is Francesco Redi and what was his work?
In 1668, Francesco Redi an Italian physician believed that maggots were created because flies laid their eggs in the meat. Redi performed an experiment where the meat was sealed in a closed container, the flies didn’t emerge.
Who is John Needham? And what is the experiment he conducted?
In 1745, John Needman an Englishman boiled chicken broth ( to kill micro organisms), however micro-organisms still appeared
In 1859 Louis Pasteur repeated whose experiment? And how did that change the theory of spontaneous generation?
Louis Pasteur repeated John Needham's experiment but he used - an 'S' tube Controlled variables: - broth, flask, light, temp Manipulated variables: -access of dust to the flask Responding: ability to grow mould Result Pasteur silenced the theory of spontaneous generation
Who discovered the nucleus within cells while studying orchids?
In 1833 Scottish microbiologist Robert Brown identified the nucleus.
Who observed that all plants are composed of cells and that the nucleus for the development if the remainder of the cell?
In 1838 German botany professor M.J Schleiden
What are the three parts of the cell theory?
- All living organisms are composed of cells. They may be unicellular or multi-cellular
- The cell is the basic unit of life
- Cells arise from pre-existing cells
What does the modern version of the cell theory include?
- Energy flow occurs within cells
- Heredity information (DNA) is passed on from cell to cell
- All cells have the same basic chemical composition
