C2- The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change Flashcards
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
How fast the reactants are changed into products
What are some examples of slow reactions?
Rusting iron and chemical weathering
What is an example of a moderate reaction?
Metal magnesium reacting with an acid to produce bubbles
What are some examples of a fast reaction?
Explosions and burning
What is collision theory?
Reaction speed depends on it, the more collisions there are, the faster the reaction and the amount of energy transferred during a collision
What 4 things does the rate of reaction depend on?
Temperature
The concentration of a solution or the pressure of a gas
Surface area
The presence of a catalyst
What will reversible reactions reach?
Equilibrium, both reactants have reached a balance and won’t change
What is La Chateliers principle?
If you change the conditions of a reversible reaction at equilibrium, the system will try to counteract that change, reversible reactions try to counteract changes
