C2 - The Periodic Table Flashcards
1
Q
What is a noble gas?
A
An element that is gas at room temperature, and has a full outer shell, making it extremely stable. They are never diatomic.
2
Q
What is an alkali metal?
A
A metal in the first group of the periodic table, which is extremely reactive.
3
Q
What are the properties of an alkali metal?
A
- React with air
- Very soft
- Silver colour
- Low melting and boiling points
- More reactive further down group
4
Q
How do alkalis react in water?
A
Fizzing and burning - water gains a high pH as hydroxides are soluble.
5
Q
What is a halogen?
A
The toxic non-metals with coloured vapours in group 7.
6
Q
What are the properties of a halogen?
A
- Low melting/boiling points
- Poor conductors
- Diatomic
- Less reactive further down group
7
Q
What is a transition element?
A
Non-reactive metals in the center block of the periodic table.
8
Q
What are the properties of a transition element?
A
- Good conductors
- Hard/strong
- High density
- High melting points
- Often forms ions
