Q

When and who created the first periodic table? Why did they leave gaps in the periodic table and how did they order their periodic table compared to modern times?

A

In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev created his version of the periodic table, leaving gaps to place elements not yet discovered. He ordered the periodic table in rows of increasing atomic mass compared to today’s increasing atomic number .

Q

Name the properties of Group 0 elements.

A

Noble gases have full outer shells with eight electrons so they do not need to lose /gain any to become stable. They are very unreactive so exist as single atoms as they do not bond to form molecules. Their boiling points increase down the group.

8
Q

Why does reactivity increase as you go down group 1 (alkali metals )?

A

The atoms increase in size.
The outer electron is further away from the nucleus , and there are more shells shielding the outer electron from the nucleus.
