C2 : Properties of Ionic Substances Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two properties of ionic substances
A
High melting / Boiling Points
Conduct electricity when in liquid or molten
2
Q
Why do ionic substances have high melting points
A
Because u need lots of energy to break the strong ionic bonds
3
Q
Why do ionic substances conduct electricity when in solution or molten
A
Ionic compounds are made of charged particles (ions) but they are not free to move, when molten, the ions become free to move and carry charge
