C2 Organelles And Functions Flashcards
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
Protective Barrier for the cell: allows transport of needed materials into the cell and waste out (important for cell interaction and communication)
Nucleus
Contains DNA, and directs all cellular activities (controls everything that happens in the cell), it has a nuclear envelope allowing transport of materials
Cytoplasm
Gel like material that suspends the other organelles and contains nutrients
Endoplasmic reticulum
Tube structure + transports materials
Rough ER = ribosomes make protein
Smooth ER = Makes oils and lipids + other fats
Ribosomes
Round and synthesizes proteins and turns amino acids into proteins. Usually connected to ER or wandering around cell
Golgi Apparatus
Creates vesicles for particles to transport out the cell like a package (receives substances from ER)
Lysosomes
Only found in animals, it protects the organelles from bacteria and produces digestive enzymes. Destroys damaged cell organelles.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell. Uses cellular respiration to convert chemical energy from sugar into useful energy. Oval like + 2 membranes
Centrioles
Only in animal cells, it is used for meiosis and mitosis. The fibers are used for cell division (splitting chromosomes)
Vacuoles/vesicles
Stores nutrients and transports material around the cell. Acts as a storage space and are bigger in plants than animals (cells)
Cell wall
Provides structure for plants, helps plant stand, and protects the organelles (that is held by cytoplasm)
Chloroplasts
Only in plants and contain chlorophyll which makes green colour. Photosynthesis happens here and results in glucose, H2O, and O2
