C2 Define Flashcards
What is the cytoskeleton made up of?
Proteins + Lipids
Open systems
Both energy and matter can be transferred
Closed systems
Only energy can flow in or out
Isolated system
No energy and no matter can leave
Equilibrium
2 opposing forces are balanced
Hydrophilic
Attracts water
Phospholipid bilayer
Responsible for transport and the cell membrane is composed of it
Brownian motion
Random movements of particles in a fluid, result of constant crashing from molecules surrounding the particle
Concentration gradient
Gradual change in concentration of dissolved solute in a solution
Turgid cell
Firm cells (becomes firm when water enters cell due to hypotonic surrounding environment)
Flaccid
Hanging/loose and soft + limp (lacking turgidity)
Plasmolysis
Shrinking if the cytoplasm and plasma membrane away from cell wall due to outflow of water in a hypertonic environment.
Rate of diffusion
Relative movement of a particle in response to a concentration gradient
