C2 4.3 Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks Flashcards
What is magma?
Liquid rock underground
What is lava?
Liquid rock above ground
Why are igneous rocks non-porous?
Because there is no space between their crystals
If igneous rocks are formed quickly, do they have big or small crystals?
Small crystals as there isn’t time for them to grow bigger
Why does granite, which forms from magma, have big crystals?
Because magma cools and freezes slowly underground, which gives more time for larger crystals to form
Where are rocks with smaller crystals formed?
In the sea or above ground, for example when volcanoes erupt
What is needed for metamorphic rocks to form?
Heat and pressure
Are metamorphic rocks porous? Why?
No - there is no space between their crystals
Which type of rocks can be changed into metamorphic rocks?
Igneous and sedimentary
Give two examples of metamorphic rocks
Marble (formed from limestone) and slate (formed from mudstone)
Give one similarities between the ways igneous and metamorphic rocks form
Heat causes changes in rocks
Give an example of an igneous rock
Granite or basalt
