C2 4.2 Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
What are the three groups of rocks?
Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic
Are sedimentary rocks soft or hard?
Soft
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical, chemical and biological
Describe freeze-thaw weathering
Water gets into a crack in a rock. When it gets colder, the water freezes and turns into ice. Ice takes up more space than liquid water and the crack in the rock gets bigger until eventually it breaks.
Describe chemical weathering
Acids in the rain react with chemicals in the rock
Name two things that can cause biological weathering
Plants and animals
Give two examples of sedimentary rocks
Limestone and sandstone
Give four things that can cause transport of sediment
Water, wind, gravity and ice
What is the name of the process where sediments settle in one place?
Deposition
What is erosion?
Weathering and transport together
What is compaction?
The weight of sediments above pressing the sediments below
What is cementation?
A substance such as salt water sticking sediments together
Sedimentary rocks have gaps between their grains. Are they porous or non-porous?
Porous
