C2- 3 How Much? Flashcards
What is the mass number?
The number pf protons and electrons.
What is the relative mass of protons and electrons?
1
What does an atom have the same number of?(atomic number)
Protons and electrons. PE
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of meutrons.
How do you work out the no of neutrons in an atom?
Mass number(top one)- atomic no(bottom one)
Do isotopes have different chemical properties?
No, only different physical properties.
What is a mole?
The relative formula mass of a substance in grams.
What do we use relative mass for?
To compare the masses of atoms.
What is the empirical formula?
The simplest ratio of the atoms or ions in a compound(not always the same as the molecular formula)
What is the yield of a chemical reaction?
The amount of product made.
What is percentage yield?
Comparing how much product is made with how much product could be made. This is key to conserve resources and reduce pollution.
What does a paper chromatography check?why?
The additives in food, including artificial colours.
This is to check all aditives are safe and permitted.
What is gas chromatography used for?
To separate compunds in a mixture.
What does a mass spectometer do?
It identifies compounds. It can find out the relative nass of a compound through its molecular ion peak
What is a reversible reaction?
Its when the products of a reaction can react to produce the reactants.
