C2-2 Structure And Properties. Flashcards
What are the properties of simple molecules?
Low melting and boiling points due to their small intermolecular forces. No overall charge meaning that they can not comduct electricity. Strong covalent bonds.
What are the properties of an ionic compund?
High melting points, solids at room temperature and can carry electricity when melted or dissolved in water as their electrons are free to move.
What is a macromolecule?
A giant covalent structure with very high melting and boiling points.
What happens when a metal gets bent?
The layers of atoms slide over each other.
Why are alloys harder?
They have atoms of different sizes, making it harder for the layers to slide.
What is an alloy that can return to its original shape through heating called?
A shape-memory alloy?
What are the properties of polymers?
They depend on the monomers and the reaction conditions.
Do thermosoftening or thermosetting polymers soften and melt easily when heated?
Thermosoftening
What is nano science?
Study of science of particles between 1-100 nanometres.
What are nanoparticles used for?
Sensors, catalysts, coatings, cosmetics such as sun screens, can also give construction materials special properties.
