C2-1 Structure And Bonding Flashcards
What forms ionic bonding?
A metal and a non metal.
What are covalent bonds?
Bonds between non metals where a pair of electrons is shared
In ionic bonding, what atom looses an electron? What charge does it gain?
Metal, positive( if giving a present one feels positive)
What happens when group 1&7 bond?
A noble gass-like structure is made.
How do atoms get held together in ionic bonding?
Oppositely charged ions attract each other forming giant structures with high electrostatic forces.
What is the charge in a ionic compound?
Neutral, as they cancel each other out.
How many covalent bonds does a atom make?
As many needed to have a full outer shell( to achieve a stable electronic structure)
How are atoms arranged in a metal?
Atoms in a metallic element are all the same size and get arranged in regular patterns. Very closely packed together.
How does metallic bonding work?
When metal atoms are packed together, the electrons in the highest energy level are delocalised amd then move free between the electrons. This forms a lattice of positive ions in a sea of electrons. The giant structure is held together by the force between the positive ions and the delocalised electrons.
