C2 Flashcards
what is the Periodic Table
A table of all the known elements arranged in order of atomic number so
that elements with similar properties are in columns, known as groups
who is Mendeleev
The scientist who developed the periodic table. He left gaps for elements he
predicted had not yet been discovered
what are groups
A column of the periodic table that contains elements with similar chemical
properties
what are Alkali Metals
A metal in Group 1 of the periodic table
what are Transition elements
Most metals. are transition metals . They include iron, copper and
chromium. The transition elements are in the central part of the periodic
table
what are Metals
An element that forms positive ions
what are Halogens
An element in Group 7 of the periodic table
what are Noble gases
An unreactive gas found in Group 0 of the periodic table
what’s an Inert
A substance that does not take part in chemical reactions
what are Non-metals
An element that forms negative ions
what are Physical properties
Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the
composition of matter. Physical properties are used to observe and describe
matter. Physical properties include: appearance, texture, color, odor,
melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, polarity, and many others
what is Melting point
The temperature at which a substance changes from solid to liquid (melts). It
is also the temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to solid
(freezes)
what is Melting
A change of state from solid to liquid
what is Boiling point
The temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas
(evaporates). It is also the temperature at which a substance changes from
gas to liquid (condenses)
what is Boiling
The process that happens at the boiling point of a substance when the rate of
evaporation is at its maximum
