Methods of recuitment
- government propaganda
- PAL’s battalions were made up of local volunteers from the same community
- national service meant all men aged 17-21 had to complete 18 months of military training and service
Changes in recuitment in ww1
- 1914 - appeal for volunteers to replace casualties
- 1916- military service act introduces conscription for unmarried men and later married men
- 1918 - conscription ends
Changes in recruitment in ww2 (1939-45)
- 1939 - national service act reintroduced conscription
- 1941 - conscription applies to men aged up to 51 and unmarried women aged 20-30
- 1943 - age limit for conscripted women increased to 51

Return to permanent, volunteer standing army
Features of a professional army
- pay and conditions match other careers
- high tech equipment means a high level training and skill
- recruits sign up for at least 4 years
- 14 weeks of training and longer for specialists
- territorial army provides a trained reserve force
What is ‘total war’
Civilans are attacked as well as soldiers
Why did total warfare occur?
The developments in scale and weaponary led to wars of attrition, where an enemy is worn down until it runs out of manpower and resources
What is conscription?
Where people have to serve in the armed forces, rather than volunteering
Recruitment of women
Women were recruited into the forces for the first time during the world wars.
1917-18 Women were recruited into the armed forces(auxillary corps, Women’s royal Naval service and the Women’s air force)
1941- Unmarried women aged 20-30 could be conscripted
1944- 212000 women served in a range of uniform military-based roles
1992- Women were integrated into ‘male units’
What army did britain develop?
Britain has developed a regular, professional army, which currently has about 85 000 combatants. Including the RAF and the Royal Navy, the total permanent, full-time force is about 150000 people.
