C17 Design Flashcards
Anhedrrial
Decreases lateral stability.
Because the aircraft is so large if it was too stable you would require massive ailerons and and too much force to roll the aircraft.
Large Tailplane
Move the horizontal stabiliser away from the airflow
Provides life in roll to assist the wing
High T tail
Outside the airflow of the engines because of the high wing
Therefore better control at low air speeds. Allows short t/o landing distances
Externally blown flaps
Better lift control
Slower speeds
Shorter landing distances
Nacelle strakes + fuselage strakes
Reduce drag and increase wing efficiency
Vortex generators re energise the airflow over the wing that would normally be disrupted by the nacelles. During higher AOA they allowed slower speeds and lower the critical AOA
Wheel design
4 struts
2 either side
Forward and aft struts
Holding 3 tyres
12 tyres
2 at the front 14 tyres
