C1.3 Metals and their uses Flashcards
What is an ore?
A rock that contains metals
Why is gold found by itself in the ground?
Because it is unreactive so doesn’t react and join with the rocks in the ground
Describe the process of using a blast furnace
1) Iron oxide is poured into the furnace
2) It is heated at really high temperatures
3) Once it has separated the molten iron is poured out
4) The waste (slag) is poured out separately
What is reduction?
The removal of oxygen
What ions go towards the anode?
Negative ions
What ions go towards the cathode?
Positive ions
Why do all metals go to the cathode?
All metals are positive
What is phytomining?
Using plants to absorb the metal compounds and are then burnt to leave the metals behind
What is bioleaching?
Using bacteria to eat away at the rock leaving the metals behind
Why is electrolysis expensive? (2)
- There are many stages in the process
- A lot of energy is needed
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metals to make a stronger material
Name the properties of transition metals (3)
- Good conductor of heat
- Good conductor of electricity
- Can be hammered into shape
