What are the permanent methods of birth control?
A
- vasectomy
- tubal ligation

What is a vasectomy?
A
- the process of cutting the sperm duct to disrupt the function of the sperm duct
- prevent ejaculation of sperm

What is tubal ligation?
A
- cutting of the oviduct and tying of the oviduct
- prevents ovum from meeting the sperm

What are some common STIs in Singapore?
A
- AIDS
- Syphilis
- Gonorrhoea

What is AIDS (human immune deficiency syndrome)
A
- caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency syndrome)
- HIV attacks the immune system which results in a loss of immunity to common diseases
- A HIV infected person will develop AIDS as the infection progresses and will have a severely damaged immune system
- the infected person will suffer from brain and lung infection, along with severe weight loss

What is Syphilis?
A
- bacterial STI
- Infected persons may suffer from blindness and the inability to use some parts of the body
- if untreated it may lead to heart failure, insanity or even death

What is Gonorrhoea?
A
- bacterial STI
- infected persons may lose the ability to bear children if the disease spreads to their reproductive system
- Babies may become blind if the bacteria enters their eyes during childbirth

Can you treat STIs?
A
Yes. Bacterial STIs can be curable using anti-biotics.
AIDS however can not be cured using anti-biotics and is incurable and fatal.

How can we prevent and control STIs?
A
- avoid having sex with many partners
- avoid sharing items that may come into contact with blood
- use condoms to reduce the risk of infection
- do not abuse and share drug needles
- ensure that blood is screened for HIV and is safe for use
