c1.1 terms Flashcards
metabolism
all anabolic and catabolic rsnx in a living thing
anatabolic
a reaction that creates polymers from monomers using condensation synthesis
monomer + monomer -> polymer +water
anabolic
a rxn that makes monomers from polymers using hydrolysis
monomer + monomer -> polymer + water
exergonic (and what type of reaction is exergonic)
exothermic, catabolic
endergonic (and what type of rxn is endergonic)
endothermic, anabolic
transition state
enzyme
a globular protein functioning as a biological catalyst, speeding up metabolic rxn rates by lowering activation energy
active site
the site on the surface of an enzyme to which substrate(s) bind and catalyze a chemical rxn
enzyme-substrate complex
the thing that is made when a substrate binds to an enzyme (via the active site like always)
Kinetic Molecular Theory
molecular motion
the amount that molecules will vibrate– molecular motion increases with increased temperature
optimal temperature
temperature at which the enzyme is at ideal catalysing capacity.
optimum pH
pH at which the enzyme is at ideal catalysing capacity.
collision theory
in order for substrates to react, they have to have enough activation energy and also collide in the correct orientation
units that you can measure rates of enzyme catalyzed reactions
production of product per unit time
reduction in reactant per unit time
