C11 Biodivirsity Flashcards
What are the three ways biodiversity can be studied
- Habitat
- Species
- Genetic
Define habitat biodiversity
Refers to the number of different habitats within an area
Define species biodiversity
Made up of two components:
- species richness - number of different species living in an area
- species evenness - a comparison of the number of individuals in each species compared to the whole community
Define genetic biodiversity and what does it allow
A. The variety of genes that make up a species
B. Allow different characteristics to be displayed and better adaptation to the environment
What is sampling
Taking measurements of a limited number of individual organisms present in a particular area
What can ambling be used for
- estimate the number of organisms within an area without counting them all
- measure a characteristic of a particular organism
What are the 2 types of sampling
- Random
- Non random
Define random sampling
Selecting individuals by chance, each individual in a population has an equal chance of being picked
Define non random sampling
Where the sample is not chosen at random. It involves three techniques
1. Opportunistic
2. Stratified
3. Systematic
Define opportunistic sampling
Weakest form of sampling as may not be representative of the population. This involves using the organisms that are confidently
