C10 Year 9 Flashcards
What is bioleaching?
Uses bacteria to produce leachate with copper ions. It produces toxic substances and are harmful to environment. Displacement reaction as it is cheaper.
What is phytomining?
Plants absorb metal compounds in the soil. Plants do not process copper ions so they get left in the leaves. Plants are harvested, dried and made into ash. Ash is dissolved in hydrochloric or sulfures acid. Electrolysis or displacement reaction.
Why we should use recycled copper instead of ores
First, it helps conserve natural resources since we don’t have to extract and process new copper from ores. This reduces the environmental impact of mining activities. Additionally, recycling copper requires less energy compared to mining and refining new copper, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Why is it easier to collect water from waste water than getting it from lakes
Lake water has contaminants that need to be treated
Practical
In a watch glass put 4g sea water. In a glass beaker put 150ml boiling water. Out watch glass on beaker and heat beaker w Bunsen burner. Wate will evaporate and weight the salt.
Paper and plastic cups
Paper takes lots of energy and it is used once , trees is co2, it is biodegradable plastic is not but used many times non renewable crude oil
Why do we use desalination
Bc some places there is no fresh water
