Biology Flashcards
Define an organism.
An individual animal, plant or single, celled life form.
Define population
A group of organisms of the same species living in a specific area
Define ecosystem.
An area where the plants and animals living there work together and interact with each other to create a working habitat
Define interdependence.
When different species are essential to the survival of another.
Define bioaccumulation.
Accumulation of chemicals in a food chain due to the consumption of the,.
Define biotic and abiotic.
Biotic- living things such as plants, animals and bacteria in a ecosystem. Abiotic- non-living things in a ecosystem such as water, soil and atmosphere .
Aerobic respiration word equation.
Glucose+ oxygen—>carbon dioxide + water+ energy
Word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide+water ——>glucose+oxygen+water
Which minerals are used for what in plants?
Magnesium: making chlorophyll
Nitrates: protein, amino acids
Potassium: glucose transport
Phosphates: root growth
What would happen to the number of wood mice if there are less foxes?
(Grass—>wood mouse—>stoat—>fox)
(Grass—>rabbit—>stoat—>fox)
The amount of wood mouse would increase as there would be more rabbits for te stoats to eat as they are the predators and rabbits are the prey.
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
Mitochondria
What does the plant take from the soil?
Water and minerals
Define a food chain and a food web.
Food chains- defines what eats what in a ecosystems and defines the producers and consumers sof the ecosystem.
Food web- consisted of all the food chains in a ecosystem.
What are all the food types needed in a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, protein, lipids, vitamins, minerals, fibre ,water
Purpose and example of :
-carbs
-protein
-lipids
-vitamins
-minerals
-fibre
-water
- carbs: bread, pasta- energy store
-protein:fish, meat— helps growth and cell repair
—lipids:butter, extra energy store
-vitamins, orange(c)- keeps vital processes ,minerals:salt, milk
Water: water- most of our body is made from water.
